Dear Brac Bank Internet Service, You Suck!

December 6th, 2009

Really pissed off at Brac Bank internet banking service. I have been using it for last 1 year to see my transaction, debit, credit etc. Link that they gave me to log in, wasn’t even with a domain name. But anyways, that’s not my headache. I’m happy as long as I get the proper information that I registered for.

Few days back, I tried to log in to see my transaction and stuff and it said site is down or moved to a new address.

Site was moved in a new address

Site was moved in a new address

I tried it after 2 days again, but no information regarding the change. Shouldn’t have the informed me that they moved to a new location? Don’t I deserve it as their customer? So I sent an email to their IT dep and asked about it, they replied saying …

“….This requires a higher level of security for our systems and processes. Therefore, we are asking all previous I-banking subscribers to register once again to ensure that the new security standards are maintained.

after reading this, first thing came in my mind was like “WTF”, why the hell I have to register or fill up a form again? Don’t you already have my all information. I have never seen this kind of service before from any site!

But what could I do, I went to Brack Bank and registered for it again. And today they sent me a new link and log in information to use the internet banking service. I was happy yay! But hey, when I went to log in from the actual link it says “This site only supports Internet Explorer”! What?!? I don’t use IE and when I have to use I use it in VB XP. Do you think I should login to XP just to use your service dear BB?

Sorry i dont use IE for browsing...

Sorry i dont use IE for browsing...

I’m sorry, but this is complete bullshit. Don’t Firefox and Chrome have Anti-fishing capability? Or .NET framework (site is developed on .NET) always asks you to restrict users with IE?

I don’t know what option I should choose now. But Brac Bank should be careful about their customer serive. Till now it sucks!

I’m Not Using Posterous to Blog on Wordpress as It Creating Duplicate Content

October 17th, 2009

I was exited when i figured out that i could use email to post blog on my WP blog using posterous. Though i could have used email to post on WP from it’s own setting but i noticed that it was too complicated and there weren’t all features available like a rich text editor could provide. As an example, you can’t use inline image and you always have to use plain text if you post via email from WP’s email settings. That sucks! But why i was so interested to use email instead of WP’s own editor? Well, i just don’t like that editor and i feel more comfortable to use email or a desktop blog editor client. If i was a windows user i could use “Windows Live Writer” for sure. But linux doesn’t have that much good desktop blog editor client. Anyways, let’s come to the point….

So, why i’m not gonna use Posterous to post on WP blog anymore? First i thought maybe it just posts on my WP blog when i use it like #junalontherun@posterous.com but no, i was wrong. It posted on my posterous blog as well. I searched their help forum to get rid of this duplicate content but didn’t find any solution. So, i emailed to their help center and they replied immediately saying that posterous will always post the blog or whatever on it’s own site and i can’t remove it. What the hell?
Why i’m worried about this duplicate content? Well, i don’t want to destroy my own blog page rank for using a cool service. I searched google web master forums and tried to understand how Google Crowler actually handles duplicate contents. Interesting thing is, i found 100s posts related to duplicate content …seems like webmasters are really worried about it? But this post says ”There’s no such thing as a “duplicate content penalty. There are some penalties that are related to the idea of having the same content as another site—for example, if you’re scraping content from other sites and republishing it, or if you republish content without adding any additional value. These tactics are clearly outlined (and discouraged) in our webmaster guide
So this is something discouraged by Google eh. and well, don’t forget duplicate content can make your readers confused specially when you are posting exact thing in 2 different locations. I just wanted to find an alternative of posterous email service and found this cool tool called “Thingamablog“,  I haven’t tried it yet but i believe it will meet lots of fetures that Windows Live Writer provides. But for me i found another solution
What is that?
Good docs! Screenshot is kinda self explanatory but still if you want to know more about it then have a look here

Now what, i can use all the features of Google Docs? Or you think i have better solution? Then tell me :)

Completing Windows Needs on Ubuntu.

January 7th, 2009

Other day, I was having this argument with one of my friends that Linux (Ubuntu) is no more a complex OS which can be used by only some skilled people. He kept going on and on but I just wanted to prove him wrong that a normal user can use Linux if he/she doesn’t play games or doesn’t work on Flash/3D stuff. Except 2/3 issues why wouldn’t you use Linux? When you have better performance, no virus tension and more importantly, you are not using a pirated windows!

Personally, I have been using Linux for last couple of months. Few alternative softwares were just missing to full fill all needs of windows and finally I got them all in my Ubuntu stomach.

My acer laptop has a built-in camera but I didn’t have any software for it to view . Rayhan posted a needy article on additional Linux software here. From them I got this command for my web cam and its working brilliant now.

To install this web cam software open the command prompt and paste the following line

apt-get install webcam cheese

Viewing my web cam with cheese

Viewing my web cam with cheese

another problem was, my Nokia N72 mobile! I didn’t have any software like Pc Suite, all I needed was, transferring file and getting files from and to my mobile. But yes, it has also a nice solution. If you have Nokia phone and looking for a software that would do the same stuff that Pc Suite would do then have a look here.

Trasfer file from Nokia phone on your Linux

And finally, I was looking for a better screen shot capture software for Ubuntu. Something like Snag it on Windows. Unfortunately, there is NOT any Firefox add-ons that would do this job (if you know anyone, let me know please). But this software called Ksnapshot almost doing the same job. Try the following command to install this software or just search for it with “ksnapshot” from the Synaptic package manager.

sudo apt-get install ksnapshot

ksnapshot for better screen capture

ksnapshot for better screen capture

So yea, i have full filled all the needs of windows on my Ubuntu :)

Cache Problem with Facebook Profile Box and a Request to Facebook Engineers!

December 24th, 2008

Why Memcached is so popular? One of the reason could be Facebook! Facebook uses Memcached all over their application. Those who are not familiar with Memcached, “memcached is a distributed memory caching system that allows multiple servers to access the same shared memory” and yes, this is server side caching. So “Ctrl + F5″ will not work :)

If you are Facebook applications developer, i’m pretty sure you faced this caching problem with your profile box. Probably this is the reason why Facebook had to do something about it. As a result they came out with “refreshImgSrc()“. You can request your image be re-cached by using facebook.fbml.refreshImgSrc('imgURL').

But this is bothering, to clear cache I have to call an API? This is extra hassle in the development and I guess it also breaks the concentration. Personally, I never used this API, indeed I always renamed my Image name to clear the cached image.

While I was working today with similar problem, I was thinking that why Facebook cached the developer’s profile box? It would be great if they just stop caching the developers profile box. As long as they know the guy who is working is a developer! Wouldn’t it be great if they stop caching your profile box images and other contents?

So, I’m requesting Facebook engineers to consider this issue if it’s possible all the way. Trust me, It will save lots of time for developers.

A Comparative Study on Elgg, Drupal and Wordpress!

November 22nd, 2008

Elgg is known for a social networking application, Drupal is known as a Content Management System and Wordpress is known for blogging. But with all these three applications you can develop a huge community based application.

Purpose of this comparative study was to find out a better application to develop a community based application. To do that, I considered few simple things as follows.

  • How easy to create a plug-in/widget/module

  • Number of available built-in plug-ins

  • Documentation and

  • Themes

and followings are the results that I have got after installing them, playing with them and studying on them..

Elgg:

Creating a plug-in : As usual, nothing too complicated.

Available plug-ins: There around 200 plug-ins found and most common plug-ins are there.

Documentation : They have good documentations on their core developments. But its not vastly described

Themes : There are only few themes found. This is bad side of these applications that it doesn’t have too many built-in themes.

Summary : A social networking application. Installation is very easy, same for widget and plug-in. mainly focused on social networking to connect friends and make a common place for all friends. It has got all plug-ins and widgets that required creating a social application. Problem is there are not too much options or built-in features and customizations will be required in most of the cases. Although creating plug-ins and widgets will not be a big deal. It has very good drag drop options and easy installations system. Community is not that big in fact! And main problem they got only few built-in themes!

Drupal:

Creating a plug-in : Ain’t that easy as they don’t inspire you to code. What we can do is…we can install the related module and we can customize it! Or creating a module will be a little bit complected.

Available plug-ins: A lot! Saw almost all needed features which they called MODULE.

Documentation : They have PDF version of the document. And its really cool.

Themes : There are sufficient Themes available in Drupal official site and in third party site but developing a Drupal will be a little be tricky. It has to go through some enabling/disabling stuff and it has to go through some API calls as well.

Summary : Mainly a CMS but they also call it CMF. So this Content management Framework supposed to allow to customize the code and make it on our own way. It has some problem on installations. Like php.ini has default memory limit 8M but Drupar required 16M. And they also have some other complication over installations. But, after all it can be a nice choice for community based application.

Wordpress:

Creating a plug-in : Not a big deal at all! In fact, this is one of the easiest among others.

Available plug-ins: Thousands by hundreds of developers!

Documentation : Wordpress got best documentations among all these names I mentioned.

Themes : Really easy!

Summary : Wordpress is popular for its huge community and the flexibility. Their documentation is simply awesome. Creating plug-ins and theme are easier than any other one I’m comparing here. It has got all the necessary plug-ins and widgets they any kind of community based application needs.

In My Humble Opinion : Wordpress is the winner :)
