I’m Not Using Posterous to Blog on Wordpress as It Creating Duplicate Content

October 17th, 2009

I was exited when i figured out that i could use email to post blog on my WP blog using posterous. Though i could have used email to post on WP from it’s own setting but i noticed that it was too complicated and there weren’t all features available like a rich text editor could provide. As an example, you can’t use inline image and you always have to use plain text if you post via email from WP’s email settings. That sucks! But why i was so interested to use email instead of WP’s own editor? Well, i just don’t like that editor and i feel more comfortable to use email or a desktop blog editor client. If i was a windows user i could use “Windows Live Writer” for sure. But linux doesn’t have that much good desktop blog editor client. Anyways, let’s come to the point….

So, why i’m not gonna use Posterous to post on WP blog anymore? First i thought maybe it just posts on my WP blog when i use it like #junalontherun@posterous.com but no, i was wrong. It posted on my posterous blog as well. I searched their help forum to get rid of this duplicate content but didn’t find any solution. So, i emailed to their help center and they replied immediately saying that posterous will always post the blog or whatever on it’s own site and i can’t remove it. What the hell?
Why i’m worried about this duplicate content? Well, i don’t want to destroy my own blog page rank for using a cool service. I searched google web master forums and tried to understand how Google Crowler actually handles duplicate contents. Interesting thing is, i found 100s posts related to duplicate content …seems like webmasters are really worried about it? But this post says ”There’s no such thing as a “duplicate content penalty. There are some penalties that are related to the idea of having the same content as another site—for example, if you’re scraping content from other sites and republishing it, or if you republish content without adding any additional value. These tactics are clearly outlined (and discouraged) in our webmaster guide
So this is something discouraged by Google eh. and well, don’t forget duplicate content can make your readers confused specially when you are posting exact thing in 2 different locations. I just wanted to find an alternative of posterous email service and found this cool tool called “Thingamablog“,  I haven’t tried it yet but i believe it will meet lots of fetures that Windows Live Writer provides. But for me i found another solution
What is that?
Good docs! Screenshot is kinda self explanatory but still if you want to know more about it then have a look here

Now what, i can use all the features of Google Docs? Or you think i have better solution? Then tell me :)

Redesigned Homepage

August 29th, 2009

So, as I said, I would redesign my homepage and I would let you guys know my thoughts on this changes, here we go…

I can’t remember when the last time I read Google Reader, like Ttechcrunch i think RSS is dead. So there wasn’t any point to keep a big ass RSS button in the home page, rather now im keeping a small one which takes less space like its less important now.

Email subscriptions? Wait, people who come here in my blog, they come from Twitter, FriendFeed or search engine. I have noticed only few people who get notified by email. So there is no point of having a big box on the home page for email input.

Old Home

Old Home

Search is important to find a topic or any specific thing from the blog, So I kept it as it was…

Archive, categories or recent post? I got them at the bottom as I think they are not that important to put at the top of the page.

And well, i’m giving Twitter and FriendFeed more focus. Getting their live updates on my homepage. Hope it makes more scenes now. I like Google friend connect but never used it before. Trying it for the first time….let’s see how it works.

DISQUS commenting system is my most favorite commenting system. So kept it as it was.

Above all these are my thoughts behind this new design. Don’t forget to criticize me and i will be really happy if you suggest me what else i can put in my homepage. or anything i can take off?

“Undo Send” – Got Something, I Wrote About, Got Something, I Wanted!

March 20th, 2009

Can you remember this old post from my old blog where I was happy to get “Mail Goggles” which allowed you to do some simple math before sending any email to your receiver? Well, probably, this is not what I actually wanted to have in my Gmail, but for the time being it was enough to save me from making mistakes sending email to a wrong person.

Then, I opened a thread on Gmail Lab group and suggested them to have a feature like I can delete or undo a send email. Let me get some part of the suggestion from my old blog post which was published on 7th October, 2008.

Once I have realized that my email was sent to a wrong person then i can go to my sent item and simply I can delete the email! and that will also delete the email from receiver’s inbox. Well, it could be helpful till the receiver haven’t read the email! Assuming that every receiver doesn’t check the email instantly

Certainly, my idea wasn’t that matured but at least, I was sure that Lab team would realize this need. So, today, personally I was really excited and happy to see this new Gmail Lab feature that allows you to undo any send email within 5 seconds after pressing the “Send” button. This is what I exactly needed. Thanks to Gmail Lab team….

Subscribe RSS news from Prothom-alo blog

November 11th, 2008

I like to read my all web blogs/news on my Google reader. Prothom-alo blog, yet to add a RSS news subscription button on their blog site, but RSS feed news are there. Just we have to find out how to subscribe them and how to get the correct location for subscription. I’m sure Prothom-alo blog will add a subscription button very soon on their site.

But I thought for time being maybe I can just let users know how to subscribe feed news of an author, feature blogs and latest blogs.

For example, this is my homepage location in prothom-alo blog: http://prothom-aloblog.com/users/base/junal and this will be subscription URL for my latest post: http://prothom-aloblog.com/feed/posts/user/junal

Now you wan to subscribe featured blogs, here: http://prothom-aloblog.com/feed/posts/featured

For latest post: http://prothom-aloblog.com/feed/posts/latest

One more thing, it has another good way to subscribe a news/blogs. Almost all latest browsers (mostly Firefox latest version) have this option to subscribe by clicking on the RSS logo which can be found in the address bar of Firefox. Let’s say you want to subscribe a page, visit it and check of the RSS logo is enable, if so that means you can subscribe this page. Just click on it and subscribe to your RSS reader.
