Dear Facebook, Can I Trust You?

November 30th, 2008

Recently, I have been rejected twice to sign in to my Facebook account and it said “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can” – well, as a developer I have kinda lost my interest on Facebook, there are several reasons I mentioned in my previous posts. Now, i’m feeling as an user i’m also getting bored and losing my interest in it.

Yesterday, I receieved an email from Facebook team saying that ….

Unfortunately, the settings that control which email notifications get sent to you were lost. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

To reset your email notification settings, go to:

http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?notifications

Thanks,
The Facebook Team

huh? What did I wrong with it? Why would I suffer for the thing that is not my fault. Now, how about if you email me one day like “Mr. Rahman, we are sorry to say that unfortunately, we have lost your all friends list from your account, to get them back please invite all of your friends again!” – I will not be surprised trust me!

Can I trust you Facebook? Well, from now I will be more aware to keep something in your stomach!

Skype – “Problem with Audio Playback” Solved for Intrepid Ibex!

November 22nd, 2008

My Acer laptop model is 5573. and i got Realtek ALC 883 sound card. All other sound device and stuff worked fine for me on new Linux Distro called the “Intrepid Ibex”. Just skype didn’t behave that well till now :)
Every time I called someone it showed a wrong message “Problem with Audio Playback”. After left/right movement on sound devices I was able to hear from other end but the receiver didnt hear me at all. And finally after digging it I have sloved the problem :D
here is the solution how I solved it…
first of all double click on the volume control and it will open the volume manager…
default is HDA Intel (alsa mixer) change it to your sound card (in my case it is “Realtek ALC883”). Close the window now go to the option of skype.
Select sound device from left navigation and follow the screen shot I have attached here.

Setup your sound devices for audio playback problem

Now make a test call and hopefully it will work. Happy skyping :)

A Comparative Study on Elgg, Drupal and Wordpress!

November 22nd, 2008

Elgg is known for a social networking application, Drupal is known as a Content Management System and Wordpress is known for blogging. But with all these three applications you can develop a huge community based application.

Purpose of this comparative study was to find out a better application to develop a community based application. To do that, I considered few simple things as follows.

  • How easy to create a plug-in/widget/module

  • Number of available built-in plug-ins

  • Documentation and

  • Themes

and followings are the results that I have got after installing them, playing with them and studying on them..

Elgg:

Creating a plug-in : As usual, nothing too complicated.

Available plug-ins: There around 200 plug-ins found and most common plug-ins are there.

Documentation : They have good documentations on their core developments. But its not vastly described

Themes : There are only few themes found. This is bad side of these applications that it doesn’t have too many built-in themes.

Summary : A social networking application. Installation is very easy, same for widget and plug-in. mainly focused on social networking to connect friends and make a common place for all friends. It has got all plug-ins and widgets that required creating a social application. Problem is there are not too much options or built-in features and customizations will be required in most of the cases. Although creating plug-ins and widgets will not be a big deal. It has very good drag drop options and easy installations system. Community is not that big in fact! And main problem they got only few built-in themes!

Drupal:

Creating a plug-in : Ain’t that easy as they don’t inspire you to code. What we can do is…we can install the related module and we can customize it! Or creating a module will be a little bit complected.

Available plug-ins: A lot! Saw almost all needed features which they called MODULE.

Documentation : They have PDF version of the document. And its really cool.

Themes : There are sufficient Themes available in Drupal official site and in third party site but developing a Drupal will be a little be tricky. It has to go through some enabling/disabling stuff and it has to go through some API calls as well.

Summary : Mainly a CMS but they also call it CMF. So this Content management Framework supposed to allow to customize the code and make it on our own way. It has some problem on installations. Like php.ini has default memory limit 8M but Drupar required 16M. And they also have some other complication over installations. But, after all it can be a nice choice for community based application.

Wordpress:

Creating a plug-in : Not a big deal at all! In fact, this is one of the easiest among others.

Available plug-ins: Thousands by hundreds of developers!

Documentation : Wordpress got best documentations among all these names I mentioned.

Themes : Really easy!

Summary : Wordpress is popular for its huge community and the flexibility. Their documentation is simply awesome. Creating plug-ins and theme are easier than any other one I’m comparing here. It has got all the necessary plug-ins and widgets they any kind of community based application needs.

In My Humble Opinion : Wordpress is the winner :)

Attending Career Seminar at Independent University, Bangladesh

November 16th, 2008

Well, today was a different experience day for me. Things that always make me curious to know, things that always make me to run for, yes today I had this kind of experience. Not fully, but still met some faces. Hard some good advices (some of them where just dumb!)This is my university where I completed my Under Graduation.

Independent University arranged a seminar on Career guideline for fresher. There were some senior figures from different organizations and among them Hasin bhai was there too! Speakers were supposed to guide the students what they should do, how they should prepare themselves, how they should face the interview board. Everything went well and speakers just said what students were expecting. Although Hasin bhai’s presentation where kinda different (why im thinking like that? because we are from same field? maybe!)

But why I said some of advices were just dumb?! Because I just didn’t like some ideas or traditional process that were mentioned by the speakers [i.e. how to prepare your resume, how you should dress up and shit like that] For me yes, it’s just dumb! But I know this is what needed for bank employees and other organization except IT field.

So what I missed from the speakers?

Inspirations! This is what I missed; there were lots of packages of advice. If I was there as a fresher this would scared me for sure! Damn! I’m a human being, why the hell you don’t share your experience how you started your career and how you submitted your resume and stuff. What are the problems you faced? And what are the things that brought you in the position you are in today? Wouldn’t it be inspiring for me? Because you are a man of success eh!

I wish there were 1st or 2nd year’s students who were confused to decide their major subject. I would shout and say that listen guys, forget everything! If you are confused then just go for “Computer Science”. Become a nerd and become a developer, keep 50% of your heard crap!!! And go ahead. Spend hours in front of your computer every day, you never have to worry about your CGPA and stuff again!

But, I still think these fresher if they want they can choose this field even now. Not saying this to make them confused but letting them know if they are enthusiastic then come here! Become a developer , make your pocket healthy, and get known by others.

jQuery Time Picker UI

November 14th, 2008

Today, I went through this nice jQuery time picker UI which allows picking the time after clicking in the input box. 24h and 12h formats are available to select.

jQuery Time Picker UI

jQuery Time Picker UI

Got them down and played with it for a while. Must say it’s really fast, you just have to mouse over and select the time. 24h format didn’t have any prefix “AM/PM” but as usual there are prefix for 12h format. One thing is, when it shows the prefix, it goes out of the input box as a result you can only see half of “a” or “p”. So went through the codes and just added a simple CSS class just for this 12h format so that when someone select 12h formats it shows the prefix fully.

Here are some modifications.

CSS (styles.css)
.width80 {
width:80px !important;
}

Now go to the index.html and in line# 233 add the following line ….

$('#demo-4').addClass('width80');

If you use basic 12h format too, then add another line in 234

$('#demo-2').addClass('width80');

That’s it! Now it looks better I guess.
